ICON is seeking a Senior Architect I with extensive MILCON (Military Construction) experience to join our Design Build team. As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished group, you will lead the design, evaluation, and delivery of world-class high-performance buildings using ICON's technology set, with a focus on barracks, training facilities, and other critical military and government installations. As an ICONIC, you will be both a leader and a direct contributor in developing novel approaches to resilient, dignified, and sustainable military facilities. This role is based at ICON's Austin, TX campus and reports to the Senior Director of Building Design.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the design and coordination of military facilities, barracks, and other government installation projects, ensuring compliance with DoD UFCs (Unified Facilities Criteria), UFC/IBC codes, and other MILCON standards.
  • Coordinate closely with government stakeholders, base civil engineers, and contractors to achieve mission-driven project outcomes.
  • Contribute to the advancement of ICON's concrete 3D-printed wall system, optimizing for mission-readiness, force protection, safety, durability, and occupant comfort.
  • Direct and mentor project teams in producing comprehensive multi-disciplinary drawing packages across all design phases, aligned with both ICON's architectural standards and MILCON requirements.
  • Develop detailed construction documents and specifications, including anti-terrorism/force protection (AT/FP) elements, building envelope details, and durable wall assemblies.
  • Collaborate with engineers, consultants, and contractors to ensure seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, communications, and security systems into 3D-printed and hybrid building types.
  • Review consultant and subcontractor deliverables to ensure compatibility with 3D-printed systems and compliance with federal/military design standards.
  • Participate in R&D efforts for applying ICON's technology to future-forward MILCON projects, including rapid-deployable housing and resilient infrastructure.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 8+ years of architectural, customer facing experience, with at least 5+ years in MILCON or federal government facility projects (barracks, training centers, mission-critical infrastructure).
  • Professional degree in Architecture from an accredited institution.
  • Proven track record leading projects through all phases: schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration.
  • Demonstrated expertise with DoD standards, UFC/IBC codes, AT/FP guidelines, ADA, and sustainability requirements.
  • Strong Construction Administration background, including RFls, submittals, punch lists, and coordination with military/federal stakeholders.
  • Licensed Architect (U.S. jurisdiction).
  • Proficiency in Revit, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and leadership skills; ability to navigate complex multi-disciplinary teams and government processes.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with leading MILCON AEC firms-such as Mason & Hanger, AECOM, HDR, Jacobs, HNTB, or comparable organizations- is not required but considered a strong plus.
  • Experience with design-build delivery in federal and MILCON projects.
  • Familiarity with resilient design, energy efficiency, and sustainable building practices within DoD and GSA frameworks.
  • Experience with visualization and coordination tools (Enscape, Navisworks, Tekla/Dynamo).
  • LEED accreditation or equivalent (WELL, Fitwel) preferred.
  • Understanding of advanced performance modeling (energy, daylight, blast resistance, thermal mass, etc.).
